People often ask us why we chose to name our company Mofakro Group. We were aware from the start that one of the important initial decisions of any company (after its initial business model is defined) is the name that it carries, because, over the long term, the name that is chosen can help to shape consumer reactions to the brand.
And so, with that in mind, we began the process to search for a name that was unique, but also captured the essence of the heritage and good-will of the Fakhro family, that we hoped to leverage to ease our journey towards success. We wanted a name that could have its own identity, separate from our founder’s identity, while still remaining similar so as to maintain the affiliation.
Around the time that Mofakro Group was founded, a number of our team members had attended a seminar in which a case study was presented to them about the story of the Toyoda family of Japan that founded Toyota Motor Corporation. The founder, Mr. Kiichiro Toyoda chose to name the company Toyota rather than Toyoda in order to create a separation between his home life and his work life. It was also done to have a pronunciation that was easier for the western market, which was an important market in his International vision for the company.
Since the number 8 is a lucky number in Japanese, the name Toyota is also considered luckier than the name Toyoda in Japanese culture because it requires 8 strokes to write Toyota in Japanese and 7 strokes to write Toyoda. He seems to have been a person who believed that there is always an unpredictable element of luck in business.
Some of us were also greatly influenced around this time by Sir Richard Branson and his success with building up the Virgin Group to be an International company that revolves around services carrying the ‘Virgin’ brand.
It was through this combination of influences that we settled on the name Mofakro Group, with a vision to offer ‘Mofakro’ branded products and services to as wide a market as possible during our careers.
We wanted Mofakro Group to be a unique company and we wanted the name to reflect that uniqueness. The ‘h’ was removed from the Fakhro name to ease pronunciation in the English language. This was important because we believed that English would be an increasingly dominant global language in the century that we were entering and because our vision for Mofakro Group from the start was for it to be an International company during our careers. The ‘h’ was also removed to create a separation in identity between the company and the founder. As an added bonus, removing the ‘h’ meant that the ‘word’ Mofakro when spelt in English would have seven letters and seven is a lucky number in our region. We figured that if luck really does exist, we would be better off getting on its good side.
And so, with that, the name Mofakro was born; a name that has today come to reflect the fact that we are fresh and daring, but that we are still supported by an established structure that is rooted in tried and tested principles.
